You also will reduce strokes if you play intelligently as well as confidently. Be aware of your limitations and don't try to exceed them. Play aggressively if you know the shot is in your arsenal, but if you can't feather a high, soft lob over a bunker to a close-cut pin, if you haven't practiced that shot enough to be sure of pulling if off the great majority of the time, then forget it and pitch to the center of the green. Give yourself some leeway. That's not playing defensively. That's playing wisely.
