Two Great Tips from Dave Pelz

Rating 3.6/5 (8 votes)

Personally, I think Dave is one of the greatest teachers in the game of golf. He has produced so many great ways to help you visualize 'good' golf, I thought I would share with you two tips that helped me this year.

Pelz on how to minimize three putts

When you are 35 feet, or more, away from the hole, you might be thinking three-putt (or worse). The hole does look awfully small from back there.
Imagine the hole is actually in the center of a six foot circle and plan to land the ball in the circle.
This makes the putt look easier and you'll relax about such a long putt.
Funny thing, every now and then, you'll drop one in the cup too.

Pelz on how to control wedge distance

Dave has tested and believes that the best way to control the distance you hit with your wedge is with the length of your
backswing.

If you use the same tempo and a full follow though, the shorter the backswing the shorter your shot.

In order to create three repeatable distances imagine your backswing on a clock.  12:00 is above your head and 6:00 is your club as it addresses the ball.

How far will your ball fly if your backswing only goes back to 7:30 on the clock? How about at 9:00? How about at 10:30?

Can you hit 10 shots in a row the same distance starting with your hands at 9:00 and then hit through the ball with a full follow through?

Then when you see that distance on the course, you know how far back to take your backswing.

This means you will have the ability to hit the ball a 'predictable' distance.
